BREAKING: Pope Leo snubs Trump’s July 4th invitation to honor migrants instead
Pope Leo turned down an invitation to Trump’s 250th anniversary celebrations in Washington and spent America’s birthday doing something far more powerful.
While Trump threw himself military flyovers and fireworks, the Pope traveled to Lampedusa, a tiny Italian island where thousands of migrants arrive after risking their lives crossing the Mediterranean. He visited a cemetery dedicated to those lost at sea searching for freedom, laid flowers on the grave of a young boy, and threw a wreath into the water in remembrance of the dead.
JD Vance personally handed the Pope the invitation. The Vatican confirmed he had no plans to attend.
During Mass on the island, Pope Leo condemned what he called the “globalisation of indifference” toward migrants and blessed a cross made from the wood of a shipwrecked migrant boat. According to reporting from The Sunday Times, more than 1,400 people have died or gone missing crossing the Mediterranean since the start of the year, including 28 children.
The message could not have been clearer. As ICE raids sweep American cities and tens of thousands of families are deported, the first American-born pope chose to stand with the people Trump has spent his presidency demonizing.
Pope Leo is the grandson of immigrants himself. His grandfather came to America from Sicily in 1903, and his mother’s family has roots in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. He knows exactly what immigration means to the American story, and he refused to let Trump’s version of patriotism go unanswered.
