Two Florida boys are facing multiple charges after authorities say they caused at least $50,000 worth of damage inside an elementary school library — and their own mothers eventually brought them to the attention of investigators.
What deputies discovered inside the school’s library was extensive damage. Furniture had been broken apart, books were scattered throughout the room and a glass door had been smashed.
The sheriff’s office later released body-camera footage showing the condition of the library, along with images of the two boys believed to be responsible. Investigators initially appealed to the public for help identifying the suspects.
The case took a turn after the footage was circulated publicly.
Authorities said the mothers of both suspects contacted law enforcement and turned their sons in. The boys, ages 12 and 13, were subsequently questioned by investigators.
Authorities also alleged that the boys entered the school during the day and later returned after dark. Investigators said the second visit was not simply to check on the aftermath but involved additional damage.
The two juveniles now face several charges connected to the alleged break-in and destruction.
Each boy was charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of trespassing on school property, criminal mischief and theft, according to investigators.
The incident has drawn attention because of the extent of the alleged destruction and the fact that the suspects were eventually identified after their mothers contacted authorities.
The sheriff’s office thanked members of the public who provided information after investigators released the photographs. Authorities said numerous people reached out with information about the boys’ identities, along with the contacts from their mothers.
Because the suspects are minors, additional details about their identities and any potential juvenile court proceedings may be limited.
Authorities have not indicated whether further charges could be filed as the investigation continues or whether additional individuals are suspected of involvement.
For now, the two boys remain at the center of the investigation, accused of entering the school, damaging property and taking items from the facility.
The case serves as a striking example of how quickly an investigation can develop when surveillance footage, public tips and information from family members converge.
