Raised primarily in New York, Kai grew up surrounded by siblings and extended family. She developed a close relationship with her uncle Barron Trump, who is only about a year older; the two later reminisced about childhood games of hide-and-seek and soccer on the White House lawn during Donald Trump’s first term. Family routines and time with her grandparents shaped her formative years, particularly her bond with her paternal grandfather. Despite the high-profile name, she maintained a relatively private childhood. She began appearing more regularly in family photographs during the 2016 presidential campaign, but it was her speech at the 2024 Republican National Convention that brought her to national attention.
Speaking in Milwaukee just days after her grandfather survived an assassination attempt, Kai described him as “just a normal grandpa.” She recalled how he would sneak candy and soda to the grandchildren when parents weren’t looking, check on their schoolwork, and proudly share her high-honor-roll achievements with friends. She also spoke of the phone calls during the school day to discuss her golf game—and how she would gently remind him she was in class. The moment was emotional for both of them. Reflecting afterward, she noted that it felt especially meaningful and that they both got a little teary-eyed.
Golf has long been a shared passion. Kai began playing young and has competed seriously, including winning the ladies’ club championship at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. She has described the competitive edge her grandfather brings to their rounds: he tries to get in her head when they are on opposing sides, only to be reminded that she is “a Trump, too.” That intensity has coexisted with encouragement and access to courses that supported her development. She attended The Benjamin School in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, after moving to the area around age 13, and has since built a competitive junior record on junior and high-school circuits.
Even as her visibility has grown—through the RNC appearance, social media, and competitive golf—Kai has spoken about preferring a low-key presence among peers. She has said that people generally would not recognize her in everyday settings and that she prefers it that way, letting her results on the course and in school speak for themselves. At the same time, she has shown a natural ease connecting with audiences, whether through a convention speech or casual family interactions captured in photos that convey warmth and easy laughter with her grandfather.
In 2024 she announced her commitment to the University of Miami women’s golf team, expressing gratitude to her family—including her grandfather—for their support. She graduated from The Benjamin School in May 2026 and began her freshman year as a member of the Hurricanes program. With a competitive handicap that has placed her among rising junior players, an LPGA sponsor-exemption debut already behind her, and a large social-media following built largely around golf and family life, she is balancing college competition, public interest, and the ordinary milestones of young adulthood.
Kai’s story remains rooted in family closeness and a sport she shares with her grandfather, while she continues to define her own direction on the course and beyond.
