BREAKING: National Park Service Won’t Back Up Trump’s Reflecting Pool ‘Gash’ Claim

Trump told reporters he had proof of a 350 foot gash in the National Mall’s Reflecting Pool, and he said it with a straight face. He claimed vandals slashed the pool, that arrests were made, that “years in jail” were coming.

Then the National Park Service had a chance to back him up in federal court, and they wouldn’t do it. NPS deputy director Frank Lands filed a sworn declaration describing cut caulk, some peeling liner, and roughly 70 fence post tops tossed in the water. No gash. No 350 foot figure. The agency simply would not say the words.

Trump’s own number kept changing too. First it was 250 feet. Then 300. Then “numerous slashes over a very long 350 foot length.” Still no photos. The Interior Department couldn’t even answer reporters directly and just pointed them to a tweet.

Meanwhile one of the people Trump wants thrown in prison is a 67 year old retired Olympic canoeist who says he stopped his bike ride and touched a piece of peeling paint. His lawyer says they’re fighting the citations all the way.

The pool cost taxpayers $16 million to renovate. Trump now wants to drain it again for a “permanent repair” around the Fourth of July. The man who can’t get his own agency to back up his story for 48 hours wants Americans to trust him with millions more of their tax dollars.
