BREAKING: Too Star Paula Reid Quits CNN Rather Than Work Under Trump-Friendly Ownership
Paula Reid is walking away from CNN, and she’s doing it on her own terms.
CNN’s chief legal affairs correspondent has told network executives she will not renew her contract once it expires, choosing to leave rather than wait around for Paramount’s $111 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery to reshape the newsroom she works in. The Trump administration’s Department of Justice approved that merger earlier this month, clearing the way for billionaire Paramount boss David Ellison to take the reins.
Reid reportedly turned down a generous renewal offer. Instead, she had candid conversations with CNN leadership about her discomfort with the takeover and the uncertainty hanging over the network’s future. Executives wanted her to stay. They just couldn’t promise her what the newsroom would look like once Ellison was in charge.
It is not a hard thing to understand why. Ellison already showed his hand at CBS, installing MAGA-friendly Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief and setting off an exodus that included Anderson Cooper leaving 60 Minutes and longtime correspondent Scott Pelley getting pushed out after accusing Weiss of gutting the broadcast.
Reid has never been shy about holding Trump accountable. She spent over a decade at CBS pressing him on his border policies and his sluggish COVID response, and he singled her out by name for it. She is not waiting around to find out whether a Trump-friendly owner will let her keep doing that job the way it is supposed to be done.
She’s choosing her principles over a paycheck. That is exactly the kind of journalism this moment needs.
