BREAKING: One woman’s quiet dignity on the DC metro just defined America’s 250th birthday
They wore masks. She didn’t.
On America’s 250th birthday, a Reuters photographer captured the image that will outlast every fireworks display in Washington: a Black woman sitting calmly in her seat on the DC metro as masked members of the white nationalist group Patriot Front filled the train car around her.
The men had come to the capital to march. They gathered at Union Station carrying Confederate flags and chanting anti-immigrant slogans, calling for the country to be “reclaimed,” then paraded through Capitol Hill in matching uniforms with their faces covered in white cloth masks.
Their manifesto calls for a white ethnostate. Their message is apparently so popular that not one of them was willing to show his face while delivering it.
And then there is her. No mask. No uniform. No fear. Just an American riding the train in her own city, holding her ground and refusing to give a car full of cowards the reaction they came for.
The contrast could not be sharper. Two hundred fifty years after the founders declared that all people are created equal, a group of masked men marched around for about half an hour, drew almost no attention, got back on the metro, and went home. The woman they tried to intimidate is the one the whole country is talking about tonight.
That is the real story of America’s 250th. The people who hide their faces do not get to define this country. The people who hold their ground do.
