BREAKING: Newsom puts Trump on notice with “declaration of election independence” on July 4th

Gavin Newsom just used America’s 250th birthday to draw the hardest line yet against Trump’s assault on democracy.

In a Fourth of July address, the California governor announced he is working with the Legislature on new legislation that would make it a felony to seize ballots before election results are certified, a direct response to a MAGA sheriff who seized hundreds of thousands of ballots in defiance of state law.

Newsom called for a “declaration of election independence,” warning that Trump is already laying the groundwork to interfere with the upcoming elections because he knows what’s coming. “He knows that a Congress accountable to the people will put an end to the lies, the corruption, and the sale of this government to the highest bidder,” Newsom said.

The governor laid out the pattern in plain terms: the pressure campaign to “find” votes in Georgia, the fake electors, the mob sent to the Capitol on January 6th, loyalists installed in county election offices, and the Justice Department demanding sensitive voter data in at least 30 states.

He also pointed to Trump’s seizure of California’s National Guard and the march of soldiers through Los Angeles, calling it exactly what it was. “That was a test run, a rehearsal. He was seeing how far he could go and who would dare to stop him.”

But Newsom’s message wasn’t despair. It was defiance. He reminded the country that Californians already fought back and won, passing Proposition 50 last November to stop Trump from rigging congressional maps before a single vote was cast.

And he delivered a warning to anyone thinking about helping Trump interfere: “If you violate California’s laws, if you interfere with our voters, tamper with our ballots, or meddle in our election, you will be prosecuted. It does not matter who gave the order.”

Newsom closed with a promise that California will use every lawyer, every law, and every ounce of will to defend democracy against any illegal order this president dares to issue. Two hundred and fifty years after 56 men refused to kneel to an empire, the governor made clear this generation isn’t kneeling either.
